Welcome                            Rev. Eric S. Anderson

* Call to Worship (based on Psalm 107:1-9)                 Jennifer Tanouye

Leader:   Give thanks to the LORD, for God is good.
People:  God’s steadfast love endures forever.

Leader:   Let those whom God has preserved tell the story.
People:  The LORD has helped us in trouble, and so we come to worship.

Leader:   Let us thank the LORD for the steadfast love we have known.
People:  God satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.

All:           Let us worship God!

* Hymn #563: We Cannot Own the Sunlit Sky (v. 1-3)

* Invocation (based on Hosea 11:1-11)     Jennifer Tanouye

Sometimes we try hard to be faithful to your ways, O God, and sometimes we fail. We confess that sometimes we do not try, and when we do not try, we fail more quickly. Though we are not consistent, you have always led us with cords of human kindness. You have lifted us like infants to your cheeks. When we moved furthest away from you, you reached out to us. We thank you for your love and forgiveness, O God, and so we come to you in grateful worship. Amen.

Please be seated

Anthem: Maing Sises     IYAA

Time with the Children          Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Scripture: Psalm 49:1-12         Jennifer Tanouye
Hear this, all you peoples;
    give ear, all inhabitants of the world,
both low and high,
    rich and poor together.
My mouth shall speak wisdom;
    the meditation of my heart shall be understanding.
I will incline my ear to a proverb;
    I will solve my riddle to the music of the harp.

 Why should I fear in times of trouble,
    when the iniquity of my persecutors surrounds me,
those who trust in their wealth
    and boast of the abundance of their riches?
Truly, no ransom avails for one’s life,
    there is no price one can give to God for it.
For the ransom of life is costly,
    and can never suffice,
that one should live on forever
    and never see the grave.

 When we look at the wise, they die;
    fool and dolt perish together
    and leave their wealth to others.
Their graves[c] are their homes for ever,
    their dwelling-places to all generations,
    though they named lands their own.
Mortals cannot abide in their pomp;
    they are like the animals that perish.

Luke 12:13-21
Someone in the crowd said to him, ‘Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.’ But he said to him, ‘Friend, who set me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?’ And he said to them, ‘Take care! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of possessions.’ Then he told them a parable: ‘The land of a rich man produced abundantly. And he thought to himself, “What should I do, for I have no place to store my crops?” Then he said, “I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.” But God said to him, “You fool! This very night your life is being demanded of you. And the things you have prepared, whose will they be?” So it is with those who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich towards God.’

Sermon: Riches                Rev. Eric S. Anderson

WE RESPOND IN WORD AND DEED

Pastoral Prayer              Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Please join me in the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen

Call to Offering                Jennifer Tanouye

When we offer what we have to others, when we share our blessings with those who suffer, we build our treasure with God. We can do that in many ways at many times. This is just one of them: and let us take this opportunity to do so. Whether you share your gift here in the church today, through a gift online, or via an envelope in the mail, let the offering now be received.
