Candle Light Service
December 24, 2025

Prelude: The First Noel                                                              Kayleen Yuda

Opening Carol #135: O Come All Ye Faithful (v. 1-4)

Lighting of the Christ Candle                                                Nakamoto Family

Family Member: The night has come! A child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. The night has come, the child has arrived, and we have gathered to sing the praise of Jesus.

All Sing:

To a stable, hard and bare,
let us journey to stand and stare,
listening to a mother’s prayer,
as Christ is born, the blessed child of Mary.

Tune: JOSEPH LIEBER, JOSEPH MEIN 7.8.8.11.

Family Member: During the Advent season, we have lit four candles, each one representing a grace we seek in the Christ child. Tonight we light them again: a candle shining for Hope. A candle shining for Peace. A candle shining for Joy. A candle shining for Love. Jesus was born to bring these to us, and much more: Forgiveness. Power. Justice. Guidance. Inspiration. Righteousness. Companionship. Faith. God with us. For all this and in celebration of much more, we light this central candle for Christ.

Unison Prayer: We sing to you with songs both old and new, O God, in celebration of your salvation. We proclaim your greatness, shining like the stars in the heavens. We proclaim your strength, standing like the mountains. We proclaim your splendor, crashing like the spray upon the shore. And we proclaim your tender mercy, coming to us in the child of Bethlehem, you power made perfect in weakness. Increase our joy tonight as we worship you in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Christmas Pageant: The GOAT

A Christmas Skit
by Eric Anderson

December 21, 2025

Dear Audience:  There are at least TEN Jokes/Puns in this play.  See if you can hear them.

CHARACTERS

Shepherd 1: A tender of sheep
Shepherd 2: A tender of sheep and one goat
Sheep: A wooly creature
Goat: A non-wooly creature
Lead Angel: A messenger to shepherds
Angels: A backup chorus of messengers
Mary: A young woman
Joseph: A young man
Magi 1: A scholar dressed a lot like a king
Magi 2: Another scholar dressed a lot like a king
Magi 3: Yet another scholar dressed a lot like a king

SCENE 1: A hillside

[SHEPHERD 1, SHEPHERD 2, GOAT, and SHEEP enter]

Shepherd 1:   I can’t believe you brought a goat.

Shepherd 2:   Why not bring a goat? Goats are cool. They don’t get lost as often as sheep. And they give milk. That’s useful.

Shepherd 1:   OK, all that is true. But you only brought one goat. Shouldn’t you have brought a herd of goats?

Shepherd 2:   Of course I’ve heard of goats.

Shepherd 1 :   Ha, ha. I’m not sure that joke is going to be funny even if two thousand years go by.

Shepherd:   I thought it was funny. And I’m sure the goat heard. (Look at the goat) Did you think it was funny?

Goat:                Bah!

Sheep:                        Bah!

Shepherd 1:   Why did you bring just one goat?

Shepherd 2:   I’m picky.

Shepherd 1: So brought just one goat because…

Shepherd 2:   It’s the best goat.

Shepherd 1:   Just how do you choose the best goat?

Shepherd 2:   The best goat has great hair, great hooves, great ears, and most of all, great horns.

Shepherd 1:   And this one is the best goat, is it?

Goat:                Bah!

Sheep:                         Bah!

Shepherd 2:   You hear them? They agree.

Shepherd 1:   That sounded like “Bah” to me.

[The LEAD ANGEL and the ANGELS enter)

Shepherds: (ACT AFRAID!)     Aaaggghhhh!

Sheep:              Bah!

Goat:                           Bah!

Lead Angel:     Do not be afraid!

Shepherd 1:   Why not? I’m terrified!

Shepherd 2:   Me, too! I planned on the best goat, not the Lead Angel.

Angels:   (to the Shepherds)  Us, too!

Shepherd 2:   Plus the other angels. Sorry.

Lead Angel:   I bring you good news!

Shepherd 1:   We’re getting good grass this season?

Shepherd 2:   The price of goat’s milk is going up?

Shepherd 1:   My family is going to learn to spin and weave wool?

Shepherd 2:   This really is the best goat ever?

Sheep:                         Bah!

Goat:                Bah!

Lead Angel:   Think bigger, shepherds. (Make hand motions for “bigger”)

Angels:          Much bigger!

Shepherd 2:   I need a bigger goat?

Goat Johan:                Bah!

Lead Angel:   No!  Go Down the hill to the City of David…

Shepherd 1:   The what?

Lead Angel:   Bethlehem. It’s where King David came from.

Angels:   (Scold the Shepherds)       Now stop interrupting!

Lead Angel:   Down in the City of David a child has been born to save all people. He is the Messiah, the Lord.

Shepherd 1:   Wow.

Lead Angel:   Go to the city and look for a newborn who is wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.

Shepherd 2:   Excuse me. I don’t mean to interrupt, but… what are swaddling cloths?

Lead Angel:   You don’t have children, do you?

Shepherd 2:   No. I have the BEST goat, though.

Goat:                Bah!

Sheep:                         Bah!

Lead Angel:   Swaddling cloths are light blankets you wrap around a baby to keep him warm.

Shepherd 2:   Oh. OK. Good. And… One other thing?

Lead Angel:   Really? All right. What else do you want to know?

Shepherd 2:   A manger? Like, a feeding trough? We should be looking for the Messiah in a stable?

Lead Angel:   Where else would you look?

Shepherd 1:   Don’t argue with the angel.

Goat:                Bah!

Sheep:                         Bah!

Shepherd 2:   Right. We’ll look in the stables.

Shepherd 1:   Thanks for the good news!

Angels:   (To the audience)  Hallelujah! Glory to God!

[ANGELS and LEAD ANGEL exit)

Shepherd 2:   What do we do now?

Shepherd 1:   You might want to argue with angels, but not me. We’re going to Bethlehem.

Goat:                Bah!

Shepherd 1:   Don’t forget your goat.

[SHEPHERD 1, SHEPHERD 2, GOAT, and SHEEP exit)

SCENE 2: A Stable

[MARY and JOSEPH enter with baby]

Mary:                 Did I just have a baby in a stable?

[JOSEPH looks at the bundle Mary is carrying]

Joseph:               That’s a baby you’ve got. I’d say yes. Yes, you just had a baby in a stable.

Mary:                 No wonder I’m so tired. Can you hold him for a bit? ( Mary hands over the baby to Joseph.)

Joseph:               Sure. Wait. There’s a manger here. It’s got straw in it. That should be soft for a baby, right?

Mary:                 Put him in it and see if he cries.

[JOSEPH puts the baby in the manger. No crying]

Joseph:               No crying.

Mary sits on chair:      Not from him, maybe. I’m about ready to cry. What a night!

Joseph:               It’s all right, Mary. It’ll all be quiet from here.

[SHEPHERD 1, SHEPHERD 2, GOAT, and SHEEP enter and look at Mary & Joseph)

Shepherd 1:   Hi. Sorry to bother you, but is there a baby here in a manger?

Shepherd 2:  This is our sixth stable tonight and boy are my feet tired.

[GOAT looks in the manger]

Goat:                Bah!

Sheep:                         Bah!

Shepherd 2:   Would you look at that?

Shepherd 1:   It’s a baby in a manger!

Shepherd 2:   And MY GOAT  found it. He really is the best, you know.

Joseph:               Excuse me, but who are you?

Mary:                 And why are you looking for a baby in a manger? Why would you even think to look for a baby in a manger?

Shepherd 1:   Oh, we didn’t think of it.

Goat:                Bah!

Sheep:                         Bah!

Shepherd 2:   We don’t think very much, really.

Shepherd 1:   Some angels came and told us to look for a baby in a manger.

Shepherd 2:   It was pretty scary, actually.

Shepherd 1:   It was scarier after you started arguing with the angels. Who does that?

Goat:                Bah!

Sheep:                         Bah!

Shepherd 2:   I don’t do it often.

Joseph:               Slow down. You say angels told you to come here?

Shepherd 1:   They told us to look here.

Shepherd 2:   And six stables later, here we are!

Mary:                 Why? Why did the angels tell you to look for a baby in a stable?

Shepherd 2:   Oh. Didn’t we mention that?

Goat:                Bah!

Sheep:                         Bah!

Shepherd 1:   I guess we didn’t. You see, the angel told us that this baby is…

Goat:                Bah!

Shepherd 2:   THE MESSIAH!!!

[Everyone looks at the baby]

Shepherd 1:   So… that’s what a Messiah looks like?

Mary:                 When he’s just been born.

Shepherd 2:   Oh. So you knew already?

Mary:                 Let’s just say I’ve had my own conversation with an angel.

Shepherd 1:   (Look at Shepherd 2)  I’m sure she didn’t argue the way you did.

Mary:                 I just asked questions.

[LEAD ANGEL and other ANGELS enter)

Lead Angel:   You didn’t argue at all.

Mary:                 It was weird, though.

Lead Angel:   Of course it was unusual. You don’t think we send Messiahs every day, do you?

Goat:                Bah!

Sheep:                         Bah!

Lead Angel:   Well said.

Angels:          Hallelujah!

Shepherd 2:   Of course it’s well said. He’s the best goat.

[MAGI 1 and MAGI 2 enter. MAGI 1 walks and acts like they’re really tired.]

Magi 1 (carrying gold):  Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.

Lead Angel:   Hey, that’s my line!

Mary:                 Yes, I’ve heard that one before.

Magi 2 (carrying frankincense):             I’m sorry. You’ll have to forgive him. He’s been carrying the HEAVY stuff.

Joseph:               If you don’t mind, who are you, and why are you barging into our baby’s bedroom – er, stable – at this hour?

Magi 1:            Barging? We haven’t got a barge. Not a sign of a boat at all. No, we’ve had camels.

Magi 2:            Our other friend is parking the camels.

Magi 1:            Why didn’t he bring them in here? It’s a stable, after all.

Magi 2:      Because of the newborn baby! Really! Put the gold down. It’s not helping you think.

(MAGI 3 ENTERS !)

[All three MAGI put their bundles down]

Shepherd 1:   Did he say, “Gold”?

Shepherd 2:   I think he said “Gold”.

Mary:                 Gold?

Joseph:               Gold?

Goat:                Bah!

Sheep:                         Bah!

Lead Angel:   (To ALL)  Yes, he said gold.

Mary:                 Why are you carrying gold?

Magi 1:            I’m not carrying it any more. I put it down.

Magi 2:            What my exhausted friend means is that we’re here to celebrate the birth of the newborn Messiah. That’s him, isn’t it? In… Why is he in a feeding trough?

Joseph:               There wasn’t any room in the inn.

Magi 1:            I guess the inn was an “out.”

Magi 2:            That’s not going to be funny if you wait for two thousand years.

Goat:                Bah!

Sheep:                         Bah!

Magi 1:            Is that a goat criticizing my sense of humor?

Shepherd 2:   Yes, sir, but rest assured, he’s the best goat. The best goat ever.

Magi 1:          Oh. Well, that’s different. The best goat ever.

Joseph:               Could we go back to why you’re here?

Magi 2:            We’re here to welcome the newborn king, and to make sure he’s greeted with proper respect.

Magi 1:            And presents.

Magi 2:            Right. Presents for a king.

Mary:                 Kings get presents?

Goat:                Bah!

Sheep:                         Bah!

Magi 1:            Oh, yes. Kings definitely get presents. And given that this one is sleeping in a manger, it seems like a good thing.

Joseph:               She’s got a point.

Lead Angel to Mary, Joseph and the Magi:

                                    Oh, while we’re talking about it, you’ll probably want to sell the presents and go to Egypt for a while. And, wise men? Don’t go back to tell Herod where this baby is. OK?

Goat:                Bah!

Sheep:                         Bah!

Angels:          Amen!

Magi 2:            Well. All right. We’ll go home another way.

Lead Angel:   Good plan.

Mary:                 Could you tell me one more time why you’re all here in this stable with my baby in the middle of the night?

Shepherd 2:   Well, you see, we’ve got the best goat…

Shepherd 1:   I can’t believe you brought up the goat.

Shepherd 2:   No, really. We’ve got the best goat. But when I listen to the wise men here, and when I listen to the angels…

Lead Angel:   When you’re not interrupting the angels…

Shepherd 2:   I realize that while I might have the best goat, here in this manger you’ve got, I mean, we’ve got, I mean, the whole world has got:

EVERYONE SAYS:        The GREATEST OF ALL TIME!!!

Goat:                Amen!

Prelude: O Come Little Children       Kayleen Yuda

Lighting of the Candles

Ringing of the Bell

Welcome                            Rev. Eric S. Anderson

* Lighting of the Advent Candles    Albano-Suzuki family

Family Member: Would you dare to ask for a sign of God’s love? “Behold, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.” Each child is a testimony to God’s love. Each raindrop is a testimony to God’s love. Each grain of sand upon the beach is a testimony to God’s love. All creation cries, “The love of the LORD is here!”

All Sing:

On the earth’s revolving sphere,
in the heavens God’s love is clear,
for the promise of ages nears
as Christ is born, the blessed child of Mary.

Tune: JOSEPH LIEBER, JOSEPH MEIN 7.8.8.11.

Family Member: Again we light the Advent candles of Hope, of Peace, and of Joy. Today we complete the circle with the fire of love. This is a love free from selfishness and greed. This is a love free from ignorance and limitations. This is a love to embrace a child, a family, a nation, a world, even a universe. This is a love to overwhelm the powers of evil. This is a love as tiny as an atom, and as great as existence itself. This candle shines for love.

Unison Prayer                 Cynthia Debus

You might have come in majesty and might, O God. You might have come in war and in wrath. You might have come in fire and in fury. We would have recognized these signs. Instead, Emmanuel, “God with us,” is a newborn child. In humility and in amazement we recognize this sign of your holiness, your presence, and your everlasting love. Amen.

WE SHARE THE WORD OF GOD

Anthem: “Lovely Child, Holy Child” & “Mary Wore Three Links of Chain”

Time with the Children           Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Scripture: Isaiah 7:10-16         Cynthia Debus
Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven. But Ahaz said, I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test. Then Isaiah said: ‘Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel.He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted.

Matthew 1:18-25
Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.’ All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:

 ‘Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
    and they shall name him Emmanuel’,

which means, ‘God is with us.’ When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.

Christmas Pageant: The GOAT

Special Anthem: We Three Kings     Youth Instrumental Trio

WE RESPOND IN WORD AND DEED

Pastoral Prayer              Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Please join me in the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen

* Hymn #138: Jesus, Our Brother, Strong and Good (v. 1-6)

Call to Offering                Cynthia Debus

They all brought something to birthplace of Christ: mother, father, innkeeper, angel, shepherd, sheep, and yes, the goat. They all brought something, including those who journeyed far with precious things. Give now in recognition that we are always at the side of the manger, always welcoming the life of Christ into the world. Give now from your heart and your soul. Whether you share your gift here in the church today, through a gift online, or via an envelope in the mail, let the offering now be received.

Offertory: Pastorale       Kayleen Yuda

* Doxology
Praise God from whom all blessings flow,
Praise Him all creatures here below
Praise Him above ye heavenly host
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost – Amen

* Offertory Prayer         Cynthia Debus

You gave us Jesus many years ago, O God, and you continue to give us Jesus’ love through one another, through the Creation around us, and through the movements of the Holy Spirit. In thanks for Christ’s presence we offer you these gifts and our heartfelt praise. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Installation of Lay Leaders

Pastor: There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit gives them.
People: There are different ways of serving, but the same God is served.

Pastor: There are different abilities to perform service, but the same God gives ability to each of us for our particular service.
People: The Spirit’s presence is shown in some way in each person for the good of all.

Pastor: Christ is like a single body, which has many parts.
People: It is still one body even though it is made up of different parts.

Pastor: If one part of the body suffers, all the other parts suffer with it; if one part is praised, all the other parts share its happiness.
People: All of us are Christ’s body, and each one is part of it.

Presentation

Covenant

Pastor: Sisters and brothers in Christ, it is an honor to be entrusted with responsibility for particular service in the ministry of the church, whether gathered or scattered. Having prayerfully considered the duties and responsibilities of your ministry, are you prepared to serve with the help of God in Christ’s name and for the glory of God?
Lay Leaders: I am.

Pastor: Do you promise to exercise your ministry diligently and faithfully, showing for the love of Christ?
Lay Leaders: I do, relying on God’s grace.

Pastor: Members of this household of faith, you have heard the promises of our brothers and sisters in Christ who have answered God’s call to service. Let us affirm our covenant with them in prayer:

Eternal God, you have called these people to serve you in this household of faith and in the world, which you have entrusted to our care and keeping. Send your Holy Spirit on them that they may serve among us with honor and faithfulness. Help them to be diligent in their duties that your church may prosper in the mission you place before us. May their example prove worthy for all of us to follow, as we are united in Christ’s ministry, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Pastor: In the name of Jesus Christ, and on behalf of the people of Church of the Holy Cross United Church of Christ, I rejoice to announce: You are installed in your respective positions. Let all the people say:

Prelude: The Advent Chorale Kayleen Yuda

Lighting of the Candles

Ringing of the Bell

Introit: Gentle Mary Laid Her Child Bell Choir

Gentle Mary laid her Child
Lowly in a manger;
There He lay, the undefiled,
To the world a stranger:
Such a Babe in such a place,
Can He be the Savior?
Ask the saved of all the race
Who have found His favor.

Welcome                            Rev. Eric S. Anderson

* Lighting of the Advent Candles    Yamaki family

Family Member:             Please rise if you are able as we light the first three Advent candles.

Family Member: When the ancient prophet envisioned great joy, it was not just the smiling faces of people before his eyes. “The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad,” he wrote, “the desert shall rejoice and blossom.” He even imagined the flowering desert singing, making melodies of praise and thanks and joy. The joy of our Redeemer is not just a joy for a few people. It is not just a joy for many people. It is not even just a joy for all people. The joy of our Redeemer is a joy for all Creation.

All Sing:

Ocean waves shall leap in praise,
stars shall twinkle their grandest rays,
joy abundant shall hearts amaze
when Christ is born, the blessed child of Mary.

Tune: JOSEPH LIEBER, JOSEPH MEIN 7.8.8.11.

Family Member: We have lit the Advent candle of Hope. We have lit the Advent candle of Peace. Now we light the Advent candle of Joy: the Joy that exists, and the Joy still to come. This light shines for those oppressed by misfortune and human malice. This light shines for a Creation mistreated by those who call it home. This light shines for a young woman who trusted in a promise and rejoiced in God, our Savior. This light shines for Joy.

Unison Prayer                 Ming Peng

Our hearts are light in part, and heavy in part, O God. We are merry in our loves and successes, and we grieve in our losses and our needs. Rekindle Joy within us, O God. Rekindle a Joy that holds fast to the love you bear us. Rekindle a Joy that withstands the struggles we endure. Rekindle a Joy that wells up so greatly as to water a desert of suffering, bring it to blossom, and hear Creation’s joyful song. Amen.

WE SHARE THE WORD OF GOD

Anthem: Gesù Bambino                        Kayleen Yuda

Time with the Children           Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Scripture: Luke 1:46-55           Ming Peng

And Mary said,

‘My soul magnifies the Lord,
    and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.
    Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
    and holy is his name.
His mercy is for those who fear him
    from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with his arm;
    he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
    and lifted up the lowly;
he has filled the hungry with good things,
    and sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
    in remembrance of his mercy,
according to the promise he made to our ancestors,
    to Abraham and to his descendants forever.’

Matthew 11:2-11
When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. And blessed is anyone who takes no offence at me.’

As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: ‘What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces. What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written,

“See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
    who will prepare your way before you.”

Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

Sermon: What Did You Go Out to See?        Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Prelude: In the Bleak Mid-Winter    Kayleen Yuda

Lighting of the Candles

Ringing of the Bell

Welcome                            Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Moment of Concern

* Lighting of the Advent Candles    Roach family

Second Advent candle Bob Smith

Roach Family Member: What does a day of peace look like? To Isaiah, it was predators and prey sharing a home. It was a mountain on which nobody hurt or destroyed. To the Apostle Paul, it was a welcome of new people into a community united in joy and peace, believing in the love of Jesus Christ. To John the Baptist, it was a straight road and a new way of living, begun in repentance and continued in the Holy Spirit. What does peace look like to us?

All Sing:

When the wars of nations cease,
when the captives will find release,
we will welcome the Prince of Peace,
the babe who is the blessed child of Mary.

Tune: JOSEPH LIEBER, JOSEPH MEIN 7.8.8.11.

Family Member: In the first Advent candle, we lit a light for hope. In the second Advent candle, we kindle a light for peace. This light shines for all beneath the shadow of violence. This light shines for all those living in fear. This light shines for a world that is desperate for a true and lasting peace, one embracing every human soul. This light shines for Peace.

Unison prayer

Holy and Gracious God, we are burdened with conflicts. Some arise within: We are torn between obligations, torn between desires, and yes, sometimes torn between temptations. Some arise without: when harsh words and even violence come to our homes, to our communities, to our neighbors. We are burdened with conflicts, O God, so bring us the wisdom to foster your peace, the peace that passes all understanding, the peace that will make a holy mountain where nobody hurts or destroys. Let the earth be as full of your knowledge, O God, as the waters cover the sea. Amen.

Time with the Children           Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Scripture: Isaiah 11:1-10         Bob Smith
A shoot shall come out from the stock of Jesse,
    and a branch shall grow out of his roots.The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him,
    the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
    the spirit of counsel and might,
    the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.

He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
    or decide by what his ears hear;but with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
    and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
    and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked.Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist,
    and faithfulness the belt around his loins.

 The wolf shall live with the lamb,
    the leopard shall lie down with the kid,
the calf and the lion and the fatling together,
    and a little child shall lead them.The cow and the bear shall graze,
    their young shall lie down together;
    and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp,
    and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder’s den.They will not hurt or destroy
    on all my holy mountain;
for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord
    as the waters cover the sea.

 On that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a signal to the peoples;
the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling shall be glorious.

Matthew 3:1-12
In those days John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness of Judea, proclaiming, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’This is the one of whom the prophet Isaiah spoke when he said,

‘The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
“Prepare the way of the Lord,
    make his paths straight.”’

Now John wore clothing of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then the people of Jerusalem and all Judea were going out to him, and all the region along the Jordan, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.

 But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit worthy of repentance. Do not presume to say to yourselves, “We have Abraham as our ancestor”; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

 ‘I baptize you with water for repentance, but one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing-fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing-floor and will gather his wheat into the granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.’

Lighting of the Candles

Ringing of the Bell

Welcome                            Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Moment of Concern

* Lighting of the Advent Candles    Mori family

First Advent candle.     Christian Albano

Family Member:   The Scriptures are filled with visions. Some prophets looked ahead to tragedy, and others to triumph. Isaiah envisioned a world unlike the one in which he lived, filled with sickness and war. “They shall beat their swords into plowshares,” he wrote, “and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.” He never saw such a day. He hoped for it. We hope for such a day to come soon.

All Sing:

Share with us a wondrous seed
that will blossom in time of need.
The bloom of hope will sustain us here
as we await the blessed child of Mary.

Tune: JOSEPH LIEBER, JOSEPH MEIN 7.8.8.11.

Family Member:   With this first Advent candle, we kindle a light for hope. This light shines for those lost in shadow. This light shines for those oppressed in spirit. This light shines for those who can no longer imagine a better day. This light shines for hope.

Unison Prayer                 Christian Albano

Holy and Gracious God, restore the hopes of those who despair. Revive the fainting spirits, the suffering hearts. Reply to the near-silenced prayers so that all may see there is reason for hope. Feed our hope for love with love, in the name of the One who came to meet all hopes, Jesus Christ. Amen.

Anthem: Immortal, Invisible God Only Wise         Bell Choir

Time with the Children           Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Scripture: Isaiah 2:1-5  Christian Albano
The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

 In days to come
    the mountain of the Lord’s house
shall be established as the highest of the mountains,
    and shall be raised above the hills;
all the nations shall stream to it.
    Many peoples shall come and say,
‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
    to the house of the God of Jacob;
that he may teach us his ways
    and that we may walk in his paths.’
For out of Zion shall go forth instruction,
    and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
He shall judge between the nations,
    and shall arbitrate for many peoples;
they shall beat their swords into ploughshares,
    and their spears into pruning-hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
    neither shall they learn war any more.

O house of Jacob,
    come, let us walk
    in the light of the Lord!

Romans 13:11-14
Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Sermon: Hope Worth Hoping For     Rev. Eric S. Anderson

WE RESPOND IN WORD AND DEED

Special Litany for Helani Congregational Church

Pastor: When we see ashes where there was once beauty,
People: God of hope, rebuild us in love.

Pastor: When we hear silence where there was once song,
People: God of hope, sing again through us.

Pastor: When our hearts are heavy and our strength feels small,
People: God of hope, lift us by your Spirit.

Pastor: When a church is wounded, the whole-body aches.
People: Let our shared prayers and gifts become healing balm.

Pastor: As we give, may we give from the heart; as we pray, may we believe in miracles.
All: O God of resurrection hope, rebuild your house at Helani and in every heart that seeks you. ʻĀmene.

Lighting of the Candles

Ringing of the Bell

Welcome                            Rev. Eric S. Anderson

* Call to Worship:(based on Luke 1:68-79)          Jennifer Tanouye

Leader:   Blessed be the LORD God, who has looked favorably on us and redeemed us.
People:  God has raised up a mighty savior for us from the descendants of David.

Leader:   God remembered the mercy promised to our ancestors long ago.
People:  May we serve God without fear, in holiness and righteousness all our days.

Leader:   Because of the tender mercy of God, the dawn will break upon us from the sky,
People:  To shine upon those who sit in darkness, to raise us up and guide us into           the way of peace.

All:           Let us worship God!

* Hymn #86: When Morning Gilds the Skies (v. 1-4)

* Invocation (based on Psalm 46)    Jennifer Tanouye

God, you are our refuge and our strength; you are our help in trouble. The mountains shake and the seas foam, and though the breath catches in our mouths, we will not fear because we trust in you. Make the wars cease, O God. Break the bow; shatter the spear; burn the shields with fire. In the stillness, tell us again that you are God. Be with us, Holy One. Be our refuge. Amen.

Please be seated

Anthem: The King of Glory      Rick Mazurowski

Time with the Children           Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Scripture: Jeremiah 23:1-6     Jennifer Tanouye
Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! Says the Lord. Therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the Lord. Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the Lord.

 The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’

Luke 23:33-43
 When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus[a] there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.Then Jesus said, ‘Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.’ And they cast lots to divide his clothing. And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, ‘He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!’ The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, ‘If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!’ There was also an inscription over him, ‘This is the King of the Jews.’

One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding[e] him and saying, ‘Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!’ But the other rebuked him, saying, ‘Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.’ Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ He replied, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.’

Sermon: Righteous Shepherd Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Amen

* Hymn #304: All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name (v. 1-4)

Call to Offering                Jennifer Tanouye

Jesus offered us, then gave us, more than we could ever ask or expect. He gave us all of himself; he held nothing back. As we make our gifts today, we will not give everything; we are not the Messiah. But let us give what lifts our hearts, and let us give what will lift others’ souls. Whether you share your gift here in the church today, through a gift online, or via an envelope in the mail, let the offering now be received.

Offertory: The Lord’s My Shepherd Rick Mazurowski

* Doxology
Praise God from whom all blessings flow,
Praise Him all creatures here below
Praise Him above ye heavenly host
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost – Amen

* Offertory Prayer         Jennifer Tanouye

Merciful Jesus, you gave forgiveness to those who crucified you. You gave assurance to one who suffered next to you. Receive our gifts as more than sour wine; accept them as thankful offerings of our hearts. Amen.

* Hymn #301: Crown with Your Riches Crowns (v. 1-5)

Anthem: Inspired to Do Well  Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Time with the Children           Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Scripture: Isaiah 65:17-25      Mace Peng
For I am about to create new heavens
    and a new earth;
the former things shall not be remembered
    or come to mind.
But be glad and rejoice forever
    in what I am creating;
for I am about to create Jerusalem as a joy,
    and its people as a delight.
I will rejoice in Jerusalem,
    and delight in my people;
no more shall the sound of weeping be heard in it,
    or the cry of distress.
 No more shall there be in it
    an infant that lives but a few days,
    or an old person who does not live out a lifetime;
for one who dies at a hundred years will be considered a youth,
    and one who falls short of a hundred will be considered accursed.
They shall build houses and inhabit them;
    they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
They shall not build and another inhabit;
    they shall not plant and another eat;
for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be,
    and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands.
 They shall not labor in vain,
    or bear children for calamity;
for they shall be offspring blessed by the Lord—
    and their descendants as well.
 Before they call I will answer,
    while they are yet speaking I will hear.
 The wolf and the lamb shall feed together,
    the lion shall eat straw like the ox;
    but the serpent—its food shall be dust!
They shall not hurt or destroy
    on all my holy mountain,
says the Lord

2 Thessalonians 3:6-13
Now we command you, beloved, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from believers who are living in idleness and not according to the tradition that they received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us; we were not idle when we were with you, and we did not eat anyone’s bread without paying for it; but with toil and labor we worked night and day, so that we might not burden any of you. This was not because we do not have that right, but in order to give you an example to imitate. For even when we were with you, we gave you this command: Anyone unwilling to work should not eat. For we hear that some of you are living in idleness, mere busybodies, not doing any work. Now such persons we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living. Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right.

Call to Offering                Mace Peng

God has called us to work, not just for our daily needs, but so that we can bless others. Some have greater resources than we do, and they should work alongside us. WE SHARE THE WORD OF GOD

Anthem: He Leadeth Me           Kayleen Yuda

Time with the Children           Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Scripture: Haggai 2:1-9 Lorraine Davis

In the second year of King Darius, in the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the prophet Haggai, saying: Speak now to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, and say, Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Is it not in your sight as nothing? Yet now take courage, O Zerubbabel, says the Lord; take courage, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest; take courage, all you people of the land, says the Lord; work, for I am with you, says the Lord of hosts, according to the promise that I made you when you came out of Egypt. My spirit abides among you; do not fear. For thus says the Lord of hosts: Once again, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land; and I will shake all the nations, so that the treasure of all nations shall come, and I will fill this house with splendor, says the Lord of hosts. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, says the Lord of hosts. The latter splendor of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts; and in this place I will give prosperity, says the Lord of hosts.

2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17
As to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we beg you, brothers and sisters,not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as though from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. Let no one deceive you in any way; for that day will not come unless the rebellion comes first and the lawless oneis revealed, the one destined for destruction. He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, declaring himself to be God. Do you not remember that I told you these things when I was still with you?

But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sistersbeloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruitsfor salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. For this purpose he called you through our proclamation of the good news, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by our letter.

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and through grace gave us eternal comfort and good hope, comfort your hearts and strengthen them in every good work and word.

* Hymn #446: Jesus, Still Lead On (v. 1-4)

Call to Offering                Lorraine Davis

In hard times, it can be hard to remember that others suffer hard times, too. Sometimes they’re doing better than we are, and sometimes they are doing worse. Let us today make the gifts that we can from our poverty or our wealth, so that others may know that they are remembered, valued, and loved. Whether you share your gift here in the church today, through a gift online, or via an envelope in the mail, let the offering now be received.

Offertory:  Peace Shall Come  Kayleen Yuda

* Doxology
Praise God from whom all blessings flow,
Praise Him all creatures here below
Praise Him above ye heavenly host
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost – Amen

* Offertory Prayer         Lorraine Davis

Holy One, you have called us to the glory of Jesus, but we also experience the stresses of this life as Jesus did. Accept the gifts we offer from our individual situations, and as giving comforts our hearts, may they bring strength and hope to those who receive them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
