Pastor’s Corner: Head Spinning

September 27, 2023
Some of you know that I have been really struggling with the calendar this month of September.
Because the first of September was on a Friday, the month was barely half over when the third Sunday went by. I tend to assume that the second Sunday in a month will fall before the fifteenth, and the third Sunday after it. And it did – but by so little that it had my head spinning.
That’s just a fairly common feature of the calendar. There are far more things in the world that get my head spinning.
Among the things that amaze me are the glowing colors of the sky. They range from the deep blue overhead to the rich purples of twilight. As the sun crosses the horizon it casts bright reds and oranges upon the clouds. I have seen the first touch of dawn transform the grays of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa into a pink brighter than the hibiscus that grow on the edge of our campus.
The irises in our meditation garden glisten with raindrops nearly any morning, glowing crystals on the white, purple and orange. Ohi’a blossoms shine scarlet in the trees, anthuriums glisten with deeper reds, while orchids take up every color in the rainbow.
I can see the sparkle in human eyes whose irises are flecked with gold. I hear singers come together from cacophony to harmony in the blink of an eye. I feel the warmth of sunlight and the pleasant coolness of rain.
In the midst of all this wonder, what can my head do but… spin?
Let your heads spin, dear friends. The world is filled with blessing. The world is filled with God.
In peace,
Pastor Eric
