Pastor’s Corner: Maui Relief

August 16, 2023
The images from Maui are appalling. As terrible as they are, they only hint at the loss of life and the displacement of so many people. As Conference Minister the Rev. Dr. David Popham wrote (see the front cover of The Messenger), it all happened so fast, as the winds drove the flames across Lahaina town.
To our sorrow, we know something of disaster. Over the last week, people have been making the immediate response: fighting fires, getting people out of harm’s way, and creating temporary shelters. In the days to come we will mourn the dead and care for the injured. In the months ahead, government officials, business owners, and residents will assess the damage as they find new shelter options for those displaced. New buildings will begin to rise as the recovery phase begins, a phase that will extend some years ahead.
As we know.
Let us commit ourselves now – and remember to recommit ourselves in the years ahead – to the care and support of our neighbors on Maui. Let us join them as they weep, and let us care for them as they seek more lasting shelter than a gymnasium floor. Let us be with them as they plan new homes and businesses. Let us be with them as the structures rise.
We will receive a special offering again this coming Sunday which will be used for Maui relief through the Hawai’i Conference. If you would like to donate online, please donate directly to the Hawai’i Conference at this link. Please hold those affected in prayer, and in the weeks, months, and years ahead, look for ways in which you can extend care to those who have lost so much.
In peace,
Pastor Eric
