Pastor’s Corner: Return of the Community Sing

April 26, 2023
The Community Sing returns on May 12th at 6:00 pm!
We launched the Community Sing in August of 2017. The idea came from the Rev. Mary Luti, who wrote a reflection that year on the power of music and singing, and invited congregations to make time and take time to sing together. From that August until March 2020, we turned pews toward each other on the second and fourth Fridays of the month, called out song titles, and sang together until the hour was up. We sang “On Top of Spaghetti” and we sang “Amazing Grace” and we sang old favorites from these islands. There weren’t a large number of us, but our hearts were just a little lighter.
With the pandemic, gathered Community Sings were too risky, so we launched the Community Concerts. I sang songs popular at the Community Sings during these live streamed hour-long programs. There weren’t a large number of viewers, but by report I hear that our hearts were, once again, a little lighter.
In May, we will launch our new program of both Community Sings and Community Concerts. On the second Friday at 6 PM, we’ll form the Community Sing circle and sing together the songs people request. On the fourth Friday (also at 6 PM), we’ll welcome people to a Community Concert both present in the sanctuary and live streamed over the Internet. I’ll select the songs in the program to make sure we don’t infringe copyrights, and those present and those at a distance are always free to sing along.
We’re striving to make hearts just a little lighter in days that continue to stress and oppress us. Join us and be lifted up!
In peace,
Pastor Eric
