Pastor’s Corner: Some Things Stay the Same

April 19, 2023

I learned early in my career that working on Mondays… doesn’t work well.

This week I’ve had to do just that. I had to schedule a non-working event on Tuesday that would eat up most of the day. It made sense to swap my day off and to appear in the office on Monday and do the Tuesday tasks then.

It remains true, however, that working on Mondays… doesn’t work well.

We adapt to changes around us all the time. We adjust schedules, diet, and activities when something new happens to disrupt them. It happens so frequently that we may not be aware of all of them. On the positive side, it gives us a chance to experiment with new ways of doing things. Who knows? This required adjustment might be a great improvement.

As the COVID-19 pandemic presses us less and less, I hope we’ve learned about some things that work well for us. I hope we can continue doing them as we reinvent “normal.” I still think our society could make some great strides toward love and justice rather than revive the past, but if the extended “we” does not, perhaps a few of us can.

It is also true, however, that we chose some of our patterns because they work well. We learned that other options didn’t work. We can manage if we have to shift them, but it’s still better to return to what we’d been doing before.

Take a look at how things are with you, friends. What have you learned to do in new and better ways? And what patterns remain tried, true, and beneficial for you and for others?

Don’t expect me to work Mondays. It still doesn’t work well.

In peace,

Pastor Eric
