In-person Bible Study Resumes

UPDATED DAYS AND TIMES: Bible Study will be held every Wednesday evening at 5:00 p.m. and every Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m. in the Meeting Room in the Building of Faith—please enter by the door on the rear of the building, facing away from the street.

The Online Bible Study will continue to be available as long as there is interest.

Each week’s Bible Study will follow the same format, considering the Scripture texts which will be included in worship the next Sunday (look at the right column of The Weekly Chime to see what they are this week). No previous experience or background is required, and no questions are beyond considering – though not all questions have answers!

Additional Lifting of Co-vid Restrictions on In-person Worship at Church of the Holy Cross

The other day in an interfaith group somebody mentioned that different faith traditions have a different number of sacred books. It’s one of the things that I, at least, am curious about when speaking with people of other faiths – not to mention how differently we understand the role of those special books. “You’ve got only one to keep track of,” joked one of these friends, to which I had to laugh and reply, “No, we’ve got sixty-six!” They may all be bound together into something we call The Bible (literally The Book), but those sixty-six books, written over centuries in languages we don’t speak fluently, mean that our foundational text is complicated. It needs study. We suspended in-person Bible Study during the pandemic, but we think and pray that the risks are low enough to be acceptable. Beginning on February 1, we invite you to come to the Building of Faith’s smaller meeting room on Thursday mornings at 8:30 or Wednesday evening at 5:00 (updated days and times) to learn more about the Scriptures. The format is pretty informal; both groups will be reading and responding to the texts we’ll hear on the coming Sunday. I confess that I’ll be listening for ideas that may make it into the sermon a few days later. We will also continue to provide a Zoom-based Bible Study time on Tuesdays at 3:00 pm. The Bible was written by prophets and by poets, by theological historians and by history-aware theologians, by pessimists and by optimists, by well-educated people and by people raised with sheep. It is full of adventure, mystery, conflict, and blessing. It describes people we’d want to be like – and people we really don’t want to act like at all. Join us for Bible Study in person or online, and look more deeply into these special, sacred books.

Blessings to you, Pastor Eric
