Welcome                                                                                                    Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Prelude: Savior, Lead Us                                                                      Bonnie Alger

Call to Worship: based on Sirach 35:12-17                                    Carolyn Lum-Bellem

Leader:         Give to the Most High as God has given to you. Give as generously as you can afford.
People:        The LORD is one who repays, not just a little but sevenfold.

Leader:         But do not attempt to bribe God with gold or with gifts, for God will not accept it.
People:        We will offer honest sacrifice to the God who shows justice and impartiality.

Leader:         God will listen to one who is wronged and hear their prayer.
People:        God will not ignore the appeals of the disadvantaged of the earth.

All: Let us worship God!

Invocation: based on Psalm 65                                                           Carolyn Lum-Bellem

Praise is due to you, O God, and in faithfulness to you we will keep the promises we have made. We praise you because you forgive our transgressions. We bless you because you deliver us from distress. By your strength you established the mountains. You wear might as we wear clothing. Let the hills adorn themselves with joy, let the meadows clothe themselves with flocks, and let the valleys deck themselves with grain. Let all shout and sing together for joy! Amen.

Vocal Anthem: Ningen Kot (Glory of God)                                    IYAA

Time with the Children

Instrumental Anthem: I Need You Every Hour                          Kanako Okita

Scripture                                                                                                    Carolyn Lum-Bellem

Psalm 84:1-7
How lovely is your dwelling place,
    O Lord of hosts!
My soul longs, indeed it faints
    for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh sing for joy
    to the living God.

 Even the sparrow finds a home,
    and the swallow a nest for herself,
    where she may lay her young,
at your altars, O Lord of hosts,
    my King and my God.
Happy are those who live in your house,
    ever singing your praise. Selah

Happy are those whose strength is in you,
    in whose heart are the highways to Zion.
As they go through the valley of Baca
    they make it a place of springs;
    the early rain also covers it with pools.
They go from strength to strength;
    the God of gods will be seen in Zion.

Luke 18:9-14
He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: ‘Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax-collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, “God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax-collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.” But the tax-collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.’

Sermon: Hold the Contempt, Please                                                 Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Pastoral Prayer                                                                                       Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Please stand and join me in the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Call to Offering                                                                                        Carolyn Lum-Bellem

No, we cannot bribe God. We can thank God. We cannot buy God. We can appreciate God. We cannot give God anything that is not already God’s. We can declare our commitment to God’s will and ways with our gifts. Whether you share your gift here in the church today, through a gift online, or via an envelope in the mail, let the offering now be received.

Offertory: Abide With Me                                                                    Bonnie Alger

Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings flow,
Praise Him all creatures here below

Praise Him above ye heavenly host
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost – Amen

Offertory Prayer                                                                                    Carolyn Lum-Bellem

You know that as we make our offering there are things we want and things we need, O God, things we do not forget as we extend these gifts to you. Receive them with your grace, and hear as well the needs of our hearts, which we offer also in Jesus’ name. Amen.
