Pastor’s Corner: Even as We Wait

September 21, 2022
I’m sure you all know the phrase, “Hurry up and wait.” Even if you don’t, I’m sure you’ve had the experience.
I’d like to encourage you to “hurry up and wait.”
I encourage you to get thinking about taking part in an interfaith build with Habitat for Humanity Hawai’i Island. Interfaith Communities in Action arranged to take part in three days of a new home construction in Puna. As it happens, the family lost their home to the 2018 eruption, so they know something about waiting.
Among ICIA leadership, we know something about waiting, too. We had notice of an initial date, but it’s been delayed. There are things that specialists need to do before Habitat is ready for volunteer workers, and those have taken longer than expected. At this moment, we’re guessing that things might be ready at the end of October or beginning of November.
That is a guess.
There are things we can do to get ready, though. Builds tend to run Thursday through Saturday, with two working shifts per day. Can you clear some mornings or afternoons on such a day a few weeks out? The builders will also need some lunches and snacks. Can we put together a hospitality group to take care of one of those days or the snacks for one of those shifts?
Habitat for Humanity was fostered on this island by leaders who came from this church. I would love to see us actively engaged in this project. I hope you can hurry up and get excited…
…Even as we wait.
Pastor Eric
