Pastor’s Corner: Walking to be Seen

July 20, 2022

Mahalo nui loa to those who have already supported the very first Walk to End Family Homelessness of Interfaith Communities in Action. When worship ended this past Sunday, I was overwhelmed with the number of people who had pledged their support to the effort to end family homelessness on Hawai’i Island by sponsoring my walk on August 6. I am so grateful to all of you!

And now… I just want to ask one more thing.

Would you join the walk?

The monetary gifts are, as you know, extremely important. This year they’ll support Habitat for Humanity of Hawai’i Island. Even with all the volunteer labor Habitat enjoys, houses cost money. Your contributions make an enormous difference.

Your presence also makes an enormous difference.

If a large group of people gather on the morning of August 6 and parade around the Civic, they will be making a clear statement that we, the citizens of Hawai’i, want to end family homelessness. We do not want another child to spend the night without a roof. We do not want the stresses and traumas that afflict homeless children to work their way out as they enter adulthood.

We want our neighbors to sleep in peace and security. We especially want this for the children.

Come out and walk on August 6, friends. Take a lap or two around the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium at 7:30 in the morning. Break into the Hokey Pokey or the Electric Slide when those tunes start to play. Stay and enjoy musical performances ranging from swing ballads to Taiko drumming.

Tell your neighbors. Tell the world. Every child should sleep in a home.
