What I’m Thinking: Prayer

Jesus taught his followers pattern, persistence, and hope in prayer.

Here’s a transcript:

I’m thinking about the 11th chapter of Luke’s Gospel (Luke 11:1-13), which begins with Jesus at prayer. When he was finished, one of his disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray.

Jesus replied with one of the most famous, indeed one of the most repeated prayers in the world. We call it the Lord’s Prayer. It is spoken at nearly every Christian worship service around the world.

Jesus did not stop there, however. He told a story about persistence and he told another story about responsiveness.

Jesus encouraged persistence in prayer. His story even implied that it’s persistence that brings about responsiveness, which is why I suspect he followed up with that second story. In that second story, Jesus talked about how we human beings, who are so imperfect, know how to do good things for the ones that we love. God, said Jesus, knows that even better. How much more than we imperfect human beings can the Perfect, the Perfectly Loving One, respond to the children of the world? How much more will God give the Holy Spirit when we ask?

Jesus’ teaching about prayer was not just about words to say, although they form both an excellent prayer in themselves and they also serve as a great outline for expanded prayer. Jesus encouraged persistence in prayer, not because that is what will get God to respond but because persistence keeps us in regular communion with God. And Jesus encouraged hope in prayer, reminding us that there is One who loves us best, One who loves us beyond our imagination, One who hears our prayers and responds.

That’s what I’m thinking. I’m curious to hear what you’re thinking. Leave me your thoughts in the comments section below; I’d love to hear from you.
