Welcome                                                                                                    Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Prelude: The Heavens Declare—B. Marcello                                Kayleen Yuda

Call to Worship:  based on John 13:31-35                                       Stefan Tanouye

Leader: Jesus declared that he had been glorified, that God had been glorified in him.
People: He said it knowing that he would be arrested that evening and crucified in the morning.

Leader: As he prepared for the trials ahead, he gave one last commandment to his followers.
People: “Love one another,” he told them. “Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.”

Leader: If you remember nothing from this day, remember this:
People: Jesus told us to love one another. Just as he has loved us, we also will love one another.

Leader: Let us worship God!

Invocation: based on Revelation 21:1-6                                                  Stefan Tanouye

Send us a vision, O God. We do not ask for the sight of holy cities descending from heaven, or the sound of angelic voices declaring your praise. We ask for the direction of the One who makes all things new. May the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, be among us and guide us. May we receive and may we share the water of the spring of life. Amen.

Scripture                                                                                                    Stefan Tanouye

Psalm 148
Praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord from the heavens;
    praise him in the heights above.
Praise him, all his angels;
    praise him, all his heavenly hosts.
Praise him, sun and moon;
    praise him, all you shining stars.
Praise him, you highest heavens
    and you waters above the skies.

 Let them praise the name of the Lord,
    for at his command they were created,
and he established them for ever and ever—
    he issued a decree that will never pass away.

 Praise the Lord from the earth,
    you great sea creatures and all ocean depths,
lightning and hail, snow and clouds,
    stormy winds that do his bidding,
you mountains and all hills,
    fruit trees and all cedars,
wild animals and all cattle,
    small creatures and flying birds,
kings of the earth and all nations,
    you princes and all rulers on earth,
young men and women,
    old men and children.

 Let them praise the name of the Lord,
    for his name alone is exalted;
    his splendor is above the earth and the heavens.
And he has raised up for his people a horn,
    the praise of all his faithful servants,
    of Israel, the people close to his heart.

Praise the Lord.

Acts 11:1-18
The apostles and the believers throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him and said, “You went into the house of uncircumcised men and ate with them.”

Starting from the beginning, Peter told them the whole story: “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. I saw something like a large sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came down to where I was. I looked into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, reptiles and birds. Then I heard a voice telling me, ‘Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.’

 “I replied, ‘Surely not, Lord! Nothing impure or unclean has ever entered my mouth.’

 “The voice spoke from heaven a second time, ‘Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.’ This happened three times, and then it was all pulled up to heaven again.

 “Right then three men who had been sent to me from Caesarea stopped at the house where I was staying. The Spirit told me to have no hesitation about going with them. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man’s house. He told us how he had seen an angel appear in his house and say, ‘Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He will bring you a message through which you and all your household will be saved.’

 “As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. Then I remembered what the Lord had said: ‘John baptized withwater, but you will be baptized withthe Holy Spirit.’ So if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to think that I could stand in God’s way?”

When they heard this, they had no further objections and praised God, saying, “So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance that leads to life.”

Sermon: Not What We Expected – or Wanted?                            Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Pastoral Prayer                                                                                       Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Please join me in the Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen

Call to Offering                                                                                        Stefan Tanouye

We praise the God who made the heavens and the earth in all their splendor and their wonder. We praise the God who made all people, from the youngest infant to the eldest of the kupuna. We praise the God who made all in which we delight, and in praise of God, let us present our gifts. Whether you share your gift here in the church today, through a gift online, or via an envelope in the mail, God is praised in your generosity. Let the offering now be received.

Offertory: Andante–Theile                                                                  Kayleen Yuda

Praise Him all creatures here below
Praise Him above ye heavenly host
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost – Amen

Offertory Prayer                                                                                     Stefan Tanouye

Creator God, we praise you in these gifts. May they be used in ways that we and that others may be inspired to praise you further in celebration of your greatness and your grace. Amen.
