Reign of Christ Sunday
Rev. Eric S. Anderson, Pastor
WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD
Welcome Rev. Eric S. Anderson
Prelude: We Gather Together—Ritter (based on a Netherlands folk song)
Kayleen Yuda
Call to Worship: based on Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14 Bob Smith
Leader: In a vision long ago, a prophet perceived the LORD of hosts enthroned like a monarch.
All: Daniel described our God in terms of majesty and power.
Leader: But amidst the images of fire and smoke, Daniel saw a figure “like a human being.”
All: This human being came and stood within the clouds of heaven.
Leader: To this figure like a human being God gave dominion and glory and power:
All: To one like us, who knows our needs, who has felt our pains, and so we worship Christ who reigns.
Invocation: based on Psalm 93 Bob Smith
We also imagine you robed in majesty, O God, like a monarch upon a throne, like a person of physical strength, like one of us but greater. But you are the Creator, and we created in your image, an image we do not fully understand. Accept in this time our prayers, petitions, and praise, O God, which we offer to your holiness beyond our comprehending. You are more majestic than we can imagine, more gracious, and more loving, and so we worship you. Amen.

Scripture Bob Smith
2 Samuel 23:1-7
Now these are the last words of David:
The oracle of David, son of Jesse,
the oracle of the man whom God exalted,
the anointed of the God of Jacob,
the favorite of the Strong One of Israel:
The spirit of the Lord speaks through me,
his word is upon my tongue.
The God of Israel has spoken,
the Rock of Israel has said to me:
One who rules over people justly,
ruling in the fear of God,
is like the light of morning,
like the sun rising on a cloudless morning,
gleaming from the rain on the grassy land.
Is not my house like this with God?
For he has made with me an everlasting covenant,
ordered in all things and secure.
Will he not cause to prosper
all my help and my desire?
But the godless are all like thorns that are thrown away;
for they cannot be picked up with the hand;
to touch them one uses an iron bar
or the shaft of a spear.
And they are entirely consumed in fire on the spot.
John 18:33-37
Then Pilate entered the headquartersagain, summoned Jesus, and asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” Jesus answered, “Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?” Pilate replied, “I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?” Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.” Pilate asked him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”
Story/Sermon: Royal Contrasts Rev. Eric S. Anderson
Pastoral Prayer: Rev. Eric S. Anderson
Please join me in the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen
Instrumental Anthem: Sonata in C Major, K.159– Scarlatti Kanako Okita
Call to Offering Bob Smith
Earthly rulers, elected or appointed, have a habit of forgetting the nature of service. When God came to earth in Jesus, however, that service was never forgotten. In praise and thanksgiving for God’s extravagant grace, bring your gifts and your prayers to the Church of Christ. Please send your offering and your pledge through the mail in an envelope to 440 West Lanikaula Street, Hilo, Hawai’i, 96720, or give online at holycrosshilo.com/donate.
Offertory Prayer
Beyond hope or expectation you came to Earth, O God. You embodied the call you gave to us: You cared for us. You served us. Accept and bless these offerings, O God, that we present to you so that together we may serve one another. Amen.
