Online Worship October 10, 2021
Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost

Rev. Eric S. Anderson, Pastor
Rev. Jonathan Roach, Guest Pastor

Welcome                                                                                 Rev. Jonathan Roach

Prelude:  Sweet Songs – Smith Kayleen Yuda
(based on the early American tune, “Cincinnati)

Call to Worship: based on Psalm 103:1-18 Stefan Tanouye

One: Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless the holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits—who forgives all our iniquity, who heals all our diseases, who redeems our lives from the depths, who crowns us with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies us with goodness as long as we live so that our youth is renewed like the vulture’s.

All: The Lord works vindication and justice for all who are oppressed. The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. God does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.

One: For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is God steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far God removes our transgressions from us. As parents have compassion for their children, so the Lord has compassion for all.

All: As for mortals, our days are like grass; we flourish like a flower of the field; for the wind passes over it, and we are gone. But the steadfast love of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting, and his righteousness to our children’s children, to those who keep his covenant and remember to live the commandments.

Please join me in the Prayer of Invocation:
Creator God, May the road rise up to meet all who walk this pilgrimage of life with me. May the wind be always at their backs. May the sunshine fall warmly upon their faces; may the rains fall soft upon their fields and during this service today and until we meet again, may you, our God, hold all of us in the palm of Your hand.

Vocal Hymn: #505 Sweet Hour of Prayer                                Doug Albertson

Scripture: 1 Samuel 1:9-18 (The Message) Stefan Tanouye
So Hannah ate. Then she pulled herself together, slipped away quietly, and entered the sanctuary. The priest Eli was on duty at the entrance to God’s Temple in the customary seat. Crushed in soul, Hannah prayed to God and cried and cried—inconsolably. Then she made a vow:

Oh, God-of-the-Angel-Armies,
If you’ll take a good, hard look at my pain,
If you’ll quit neglecting me and go into action for me
By giving me a son,
I’ll give him completely, unreservedly to you.
I’ll set him apart for a life of holy discipline.

It so happened that as she continued in prayer before God, Eli was watching her closely. Hannah was praying in her heart, silently. Her lips moved, but no sound was heard. Eli jumped to the conclusion that she was drunk. He approached her and said, “You’re drunk! How long do you plan to keep this up? Sober up, woman!”

Hannah said, “Oh no, sir—please! I’m a woman brokenhearted. I haven’t been drinking. Not a drop of wine or beer. The only thing I’ve been pouring out is my heart, pouring it out to God. Don’t for a minute think I’m a bad woman. It’s because I’m so desperately unhappy and in such pain that I’ve stayed here so long.”

Eli answered her, “Go in peace. And may the God of Israel give you what you have asked of him.”

“Think well of me—and pray for me!” she said and went her way. Then she ate heartily, her face radiant.

Sermon: The Pilgrim’s Path: The Mothering of Silence           Rev. Jonathan Roach

Silent Prayers

Pastoral Prayer                                                                       Rev. Jonathan Roach

Please join me in the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen

Instrumental Anthem: Mazurka in C major, Op 24-2-Chopin   Kanako Okita

The Call to Offering: Stefan Tanouye
My friends, as we enter this time of giving, I invite all of us to send our offerings through the mail in an envelope to 440 West Lanikaula Street, Hilo, Hawai’i, 96720, or give online at and let us pray together.

The Prayer of Dedication: Stefan Tanouye
All: Gracious Lord, you’ve blessed me with friends and laughter and fun. With rain that’s as soft as the light from the sun. You’ve blessed me with the stars to brighten each night. You’ve given me help to know wrong from right. You’ve given me so much, so please Lord give me a heart that is always grateful to you and take what I give this day to bless others, I pray. Amen!
