Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

Rev. Eric S. Anderson, Pastor

WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD

Welcome                                                                                     Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Prelude: On Wings of Morn—Nolte                                           Kayleen Yuda

Call to Worship: based on Psalm 1                                            Gloria Kobayashi

Leader: “Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked,” wrote the Psalmist,
All: But if we were pushed, we would think that wickedness looks more fun.

Leader: Those who delight in God’s law are like trees planted by streams of water,
All: But it is the greedy and the unscrupulous who soak up all the resources of Earth.

Leader: “Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,” wrote the Psalmist.
All: Our earnest prayer is that God will watch over the way of the righteous, and persuade sinners to follow the ways of life and peace.

Invocation: based on Jeremiah 11:18-20                                          Gloria Kobayashi

Sometimes it seems like we are the lambs led to slaughter, O God, subject to the greed and arrogance and power of people who devise schemes against us and against those you love. May we endure the carelessness and cluelessness and callousness of those whose actions harm. O God who judges righteously, weigh the hearts and minds of your people, and raise up kindness, truth, and peace. Amen.

Hymn #539: Won’t You Let Me Be Your Servant?                    Eric Anderson

                                                                                                   Movement led by Genie Phillips

Scripture: Psalm 54                                                                    Gloria Kobayashi

Save me, O God, by your name,
    and vindicate me by your might.
Hear my prayer, O God;
    give ear to the words of my mouth.

For the insolent have risen against me,
    the ruthless seek my life;
    they do not set God before them.

But surely, God is my helper;
    the Lord is the upholder ofmy life.
He will repay my enemies for their evil.
    In your faithfulness, put an end to them.

With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you;
    I will give thanks to your name, O Lord, for it is good.
For he has delivered me from every trouble,
    and my eye has looked in triumph on my enemies.

Mark 9:30-37
They went on from there and passed through Galilee. He did not want anyone to know it; for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them, “The Son of Man is to be betrayed into human hands, and they will kill him, and three days after being killed, he will rise again.” But they did not understand what he was saying and were afraid to ask him.

Then they came to Capernaum; and when he was in the house he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the way?” But they were silent, for on the way they had argued with one another who was the greatest. He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all.” Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, “Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.”

Story/Sermon: Greatest                                                              Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Pastoral Prayer                                                                          Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Please join me in the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen

Instrumental Anthem: Liszt – Consolation No.3                       Kanako Okita

Call to Offering:                                                                         Gloria Kobayashi

Greatness, to many before Jesus, to many after Jesus, but most of all to Jesus himself, is compassionate action on behalf of God, God’s people, and God’s creation. This is one moment in which you can express your compassion with a gift to the Church of Jesus Christ. Please send your offering through the mail in an envelope to 440 West Lanikaula Street, Hilo, Hawai’i, 96720, or give online at holycrosshilo.com/donate. Let us pray together:

Offertory Prayer

Gracious God, in these gifts we offer some of our love for you. Let your love magnify what we have shared, so that our hearts are held firmly in your mercy, and so that our neighbors are lifted up through these gifts. Amen.
