Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost
Rev. Eric S. Anderson, Pastor
WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD
Welcome Rev. Eric S. Anderson
Prelude: God Will Take Care of You—tune: Martin, arr. Whitworth
Kayleen Yuda
Call to Worship: based on John 6:35, 41-51 Stefan Tanouye
Leader: Jesus told his followers, “I am the bread of life.”
All: Some of those who heard him wondered how this could be.
Leader: They knew his parents, after all. They knew his brothers and his sisters.
All: How could someone so familiar be the bread come down from heaven?
Leader: Only later would the truth be clear: that Jesus, flesh and blood, had been sent to us by God.
All: In this hour we await the teaching of the Spirit that affirms we have been nourished by the bread of life.
Invocation: based on Psalm 34:1-8 Stefan Tanouye
May we bless you at all times, O God; may we praise you every time we open our mouths. In this hour especially, our souls magnify you and exalt in your holy name. We sought you, and you answered. We were afraid, and you gave us courage. Let us taste your blessings once again, to know that you are good and you are God. Amen.
Hymn #539: Won’t You Let Me Be Your Servant? Eric Anderson

Scripture: Stefan Tanouye
1 Kings 19:4-8
But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.” Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, “Get up and eat.” He looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. The angel of the Lord came a second time, touched him, and said, “Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you.” He got up, and ate and drank; then he went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God.
Ephesians 4:25-5:2
So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbors, for we are members of one another. Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make room for the devil. Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labor and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy. Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you. Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved usand gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Story/Sermon: Oh, Those Virtues Rev. Eric S. Anderson
Pastoral Prayer: Rev. Eric S. Anderson
Please join me in the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen
Instrumental Anthem: Sonatine 2nd mvt.– Ravel Kanako Okita
Call to Offering: Stefan Tanouye
What builds up the community of Christ? Simple things: kindness, forgiveness, truth, and generosity. This offering is one of the ways that we share our gifts with one another, as real and as powerful as a supportive word, a reassuring glance, or a comforting embrace. Let your generosity make a difference. Please send your offering through the mail in an envelope to 440 West Lanikaula Street, Hilo, Hawai’i, 96720, or give online at holycrosshilo.com/donate. Let us pray together:
Offertory Prayer:
O Bread of Life, accept, combine, and transform these gifts of dollars and cents into nourishment for the body and for the spirit. Amen.
