Fourth Sunday after Pentecost
Father’s Day

Rev. Eric S. Anderson, Pastor

WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD

Welcome                                                                                 Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Prelude: They’ll Know We Are Christians by Our Love—Scholtes, Tune: St. Brendan’s, arr. Smith                                                                                                Kayleen Yuda

Call to Worship: based on 1 Samuel 17:1-18:16                      Jennifer Tanouye

Leader: Our ancestors have known trouble and stress, hardship and loss.
All: These are our ancestors in the faith as well as the ancestors of our blood and bone.

Leader: They have known illness and famine, war and insurrection, oppression and poverty.
All: Sometimes the sorrows cost them dear, but they gave their hope to the next generation.

Leader: May the LORD who saved David from the mighty warrior preserve us from the dangers of our time.
All: May the LORD be with us as we love one another and worship the God who keeps us whole.

Invocation: based on Psalm 9:9-20                                          Jennifer Tanouye

You are a stronghold for the oppressed, O God, a refuge in times of trouble. We put your trust in you, O God, and pray that you will not forsake those who seek you. Do not forget the needy; do not let the hope of the poor perish forever. Do not let the forces of death prevail; let the voices of life rise triumphant before you. Lift us up from the gates of death, that we may recount all your praises in the gates of your city Zion, rejoicing in your deliverance. Amen.

Hymn #441: Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me                                         Eric Anderson

Scripture                                                                                 Jennifer Tanouye

2 Corinthians 6:1-13
As we work together with him, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. For he says,

“At an acceptable time I have listened to you,
and on a day of salvation I have helped you.”

See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation! We are putting no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God we have commended ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love, truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; as unknown, and yet are well known; as dying, and see—we are alive; as punished, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything. We have spoken frankly to you Corinthians; our heart is wide open to you. There is no restriction in our affections, but only in yours. In return—I speak as to children—open wide your hearts also.

Mark 4:35-41
On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Story/Sermon: Windstorms                                                     Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Pastoral Prayer                                                                       Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Please join me in the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen

Instrumental Anthem: Nocturne No. 5 — John Field                Kanako Okita

Call to Offering:                                                                      Jennifer Tanouye

We invite you to an offering. It is the nature of the world that it calls for us to contribute our efforts and our resources. Just like the disciples on the lake, we sail the small boats of our lives. These gifts help to maintain the boat, to keep it ready to sail – and these gifts also honor the One who journeys with us throughout our lives: Jesus the Christ. Please send your offering through the mail in an envelope to 440 West Lanikaula Street, Hilo, Hawai’i, 96720, or give online at holycrosshilo.com/donate. Let us pray together:

Offertory Prayer:

Journey with the gifts we present, O Jesus, that they arrive safely at the place where they renew, inspire, and bless. As we journey together in this boat of faith with you, give us strength to weather the storms and come to the harbor of peace. Amen.
