Rev. Jonathan Roach, guest pastor
Rev. Eric S. Anderson, Pastor

Welcome                                                                                 Rev. Jonathan Roach

Prelude:                                                                                   Kayleen Yuda

Call to Worship:                                                                     Gloria Kobayashi

One: All you elders, and all you youth,
All: Come and worship!

One: All you saints, all you sinners,
All: Come and worship!

One: Wise counselors, teachers, parents and all in authority, you who think deep thoughts, all of you who have simple faith, you who heal the sick and do miraculous acts, all preachers of the Gospel, all who can discern differing spirits, everyone gifted with tongues, you who are interpreters of tongues,
All: Come and worship!

One: All you whose spirits are sad and lonely
All:  Come and worship! Alleluia! Alleluia!  We praise God with one voice, one body, one church, one mind, one spirit. We are shining with the power of our Great God’s love.

Invocation                                             Gloria Kobayashi

All: God of the heart, God of the blood and fire and smoke, you have invoked our presence here this morning with your great gift of the Holy Spirit.  May this service of worship and praise be worthy of your challenge to us.  May we turn the Spirit’s reign in our hearts to fire in our lives. May we glow red with power and love.  May we wear our fiery hearts on our sleeves for all who have eyes to see!

Scripture: Numbers 11:24-30                                                  Gloria Kobayashi

So Moses went out and told the people what the Lord had said. He brought together seventy of their elders and had them stand around the tent. Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke with him, and he took some of the power of the Spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied—but did not do so again.

However, two men, whose names were Eldad and Medad, had remained in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but did not go out to the tent. Yet the Spirit also rested on them, and they prophesied in the camp. A young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” Joshua son of Nun, who had been Moses’ aide since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!” But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!” Then Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp.

Sermon: Inside the Box? No!                                                   Rev. Jonathan Roach

Pastoral Prayer                                                                       Rev. Jonathan Roach

Please join me in the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen

Instrumental Anthem: Londonderry Air – Irish folk song Kanako Okita

Call to Offering                                                                      Gloria Kobayashi

One: In addition to our regular offering, today we invite you to contribute to the Strengthen the Church offering of the United Church of Christ. In the last year, Strengthen the Church enabled a church to hold safely distanced worship in a garden, funded technology improvements at several churches to provide streaming worship experiences, supported Navajo and Lakota college students, and gathered youth and young adult leaders for renewal and revival in a virtual setting. Just imagine what your gifts might enable in the church next year.

God calls, and we have the opportunity to answer. I pray that our Gracious God, empowers us today to be like Eldad and Medad. Let God’s spirit be upon us. Let us live and speak truth outside of whatever box the world tries to put us into. Let us break down barriers, let us cross over borders, let us sing a new song because all are welcome at God’s table. No matter where we are today, let us answer this call to share the gifts the Spirit has given to us, to empower ministry, to build up God’s work here at Church of the Holy Cross, to support, to transform, to celebrate. We each hold a nest of little blackbirds in the palm of our hand, let us cradle and care for this gift so that someday they can fly forth as the next generation of hope for a hurting world. Please send your offering through the mail in an envelope to 440 West Lanikaula Street, Hilo, Hawai’i, 96720, or give online at Let us pray together:

All: With these our earthly treasures, we return to you a portion of your blessings upon us. We sing praises to your name, O Spirit. O Holy Fire of Love and Glory, you who touch the mountains, and they smoke, we honor you all the days of our lives. Creator God, as you have given yourself away to make us holy, we are blessed by giving ourselves away to you. Amen.
