Rev. Eric S. Anderson, Pastor

WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD

Welcome                                                                                 Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Prelude: We Three Kings—John Hopkins, Jr. arr. Whitworth       Kayleen Yuda

Call to Worship: based on Genesis 1:1-5                                 Nalyn Ang

Leader: Beginnings come again and again to human beings.
All: Our birth is a beginning, and so is each new discovery.

Leader: Dawn brings a new beginning every day,
All: And night brings a close until things begin again.

Leader: Before all of our beginnings, there was God.
All: God brought the first of Creation’s beginnings as well as all that have begun since.

Leader: Let us begin our worship in this time.
All:    Let us renew our worship in this time and all times.

Invocation: based on Psalm 29                                                 Nalyn Ang

We hear your voice on the trade winds, O God, and in the rumbling of the waves. We hear your voice in the tumbling water and in the groan of shifting rock. We hear your voice as it flashes in fire; we hear your voice in the stillness of peace. Give strength to your people, O God! Bless your people with peace! Amen.

Scripture:                                                                                Nalyn Ang

Acts 19:1-7
While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?” They replied, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” Then he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They answered, “Into John’s baptism.” Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied— altogether there were about twelve of them.

Mark 1:4-11
John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

Call to Offering                                                                       Nalyn Ang

We invite you to an offering. We have been called through the Holy Spirit to be part of the people of Christ, to be part of the community of Church of the Holy Cross. We share in the healing and care of this church, of the neighborhood of Hilo, and indeed in the world as a whole. We do this with daily labor, with prayer, and with common work supported by your gifts. Please send your offering through the mail in an envelope sent to 440 West Lanikaula Street, Hilo, Hawai’i, 96720, or give online at holycrosshilo.com/donate. Let us pray together:

Offertory Prayer:
Holy One, you have called us to repentance. Sometimes we have repented; for some of our apologies you wait. You have called us to embrace the Spirit. Sometimes we have danced with it, and sometimes held ourselves apart, aloof or uncertain. You have called us to share freely with our families and our neighbors and the world. In this moment, God, we do so. Bless these gifts to your glory. Amen.
