Third Sunday of Advent

Rev. Eric S. Anderson, Pastor

WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD

Welcome                                                                                 Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Prelude: In the Bleak Mid-Winter – Innes                                Kayleen Yuda

Leader:                                                                                    Stefan Tanouye

In our church and homes
we gather around wreaths
to pray our lost hopes,
broken peace, limited joys,
and love so hard to find and share
in this season of coronavirus.
We affirm that our candles mean
we claim the power to call this season Advent
when God’s light comes into the world
nothing can overcome it.

We light the candles of hope and peace.

Family at home:                                                                      The Nakamoto Family

We now light the candle of joy
in spite of missing so many things
we thought were essential to a merry Christmas:
walking from shop to shop, lists in hand,
planning the dinner menus,
comforting one another at a funeral,
laughing at the parties,
seeing frowning children with a smiling Santa,
embracing friends we meet and meet and meet,
all those people we make time to meet and meet.

Leader:

God’s joy ignites embers under loss and sorrow
and brightens the path to love.

All Sing:

Comfort us; our hearts are cold.
Joyful Spirit will make us bold.
All a-wonder we grace behold
In Jesus Christ, the blessed child of Mary.

Tune: JOSEPH LIEBER, JOSEPH MEIN 7.8.8.11

Family at home:

Emmanuel, God be with us, in the week to come,
lighting hope, peace, and joy on the wick of our lives
so that we may shine on our world
with a simple smile, an unexpected laughter. Amen.

Invocation: based on Psalm 126                                               Stefan Tanouye

Restore our fortunes, O God, so we may be like those who dream, instead of those waking to sorrow. Fill our mouths with laughter and our tongues with shouts of joy. Let it be said among the nations, “God has done great things.” You have done great things for us, and we rejoiced, but now we water the seeds of our lives with tears. Though we go out weeping, bring us home with shouts of joy, carrying the ripened grain of life. Amen.

Scripture:                                                                                Stefan Tanouye

Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11

The spirit of the Lord God is upon me,
    because the Lord has anointed me;
he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed,
    to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives,
    and release to the prisoners;
 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor,
    and the day of vengeance of our God;
    to comfort all who mourn;
 to provide for those who mourn in Zion—
    to give them a garland instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness instead of mourning,
    the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
    the planting of the Lord, to display his glory.
They shall build up the ancient ruins,
    they shall raise up the former devastations;
they shall repair the ruined cities,
    the devastations of many generations.
For I the Lord love justice,
    I hate robbery and wrongdoing;
I will faithfully give them their recompense,
    and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
 Their descendants shall be known among the nations,
    and their offspring among the peoples;
all who see them shall acknowledge
    that they are a people whom the Lord has blessed.
 I will greatly rejoice in the Lord,
    my whole being shall exult in my God;
for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation,
    he has covered me with the robe of righteousness,
as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland,
    and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
 For as the earth brings forth its shoots,
    and as a garden causes what is sown in it to spring up,
so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise
    to spring up before all the nations.

Luke 1:46b-55

And Mary said,
“My soul magnifies the Lord,
    and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.
    Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
    and holy is his name.
His mercy is for those who fear him
    from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with his arm;
    he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
    and lifted up the lowly;
he has filled the hungry with good things,
    and sent the rich away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
    in remembrance of his mercy,
according to the promise he made to our ancestors,
    to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”

Call to Offering:                                                                      Stefan Tanouye

We invite you to an offering. In addition to support for the work of this church, we also ask and dedicate gifts to the Christmas Fund. This year the UCC Christmas Fund has received a record number of requests for financial assistance—more than twice as many as last year—from active and retired clergy, church staff, and their families. These servants of the church have spent lifetimes baptizing and blessing, teaching and preaching, marrying and burying, comforting and empowering God’s people. Now, through this special mission offering, we have the opportunity to sustain and empower them. Please send them through the mail in an envelope sent to 440 West Lanikaula Street, Hilo, Hawai’i, 96720, or give online at holycrosshilo.com/donate.

Let us pray together:

Offertory Prayer:                                                                    Stefan Tanouye

By the power of your Spirit, O God, may these gifts of gratitude and love lift up your faithful servants from the valley of need. By the power of your Spirit, may these gifts from our hearts bring down mountains of bills and anxiety. Bless these gifts, that they may bring hope to the hopeless, joy to the sorrowful, and deep love to those who have ministered in your love for so long. Amen.
