Pastor’s Corner: Let’s Write a Devotional

October 28, 2020

It isn’t Halloween yet. Thanksgiving plans are barely in progress. Who is ready to think about Advent? I’m not – but let’s do it anyway.

It has been so hard to share with one another over these last months. We have used all the means to hand – phone calls, video calls, emails, texts, postcards – but we still yearn for those leisurely times to talk story, or just to sit and say very little. There is so little opportunity for that.

What we can do is share in an Advent devotional. A couple of years ago we produced one for Lent. It included reflections, memories, prayers, stories, photographs, and original drawings. Let’s do one of those for this Advent.

The four weeks of Advent begin on November 29. They have the themes of Hope Nov. 29 – Dec. 5), Peace (Dec. 6 – 12), Joy (Dec. 13 – 19), and Love (Dec. 20 – 23). Christmas Eve and Christmas Day get their own reflections as well.

Our Advent devotionals the last couple of years have followed a pretty clear format, but there is no need to follow that for this one. Do you have memories of Hope? Share one. Do you have experiences of Peace? Tell that story. When have you known Joy? We’d like to hear about it. And we’d love to know what Love means to you.

The first volume will need to come out the week of November 22nd, so if you’re thinking about Hope, please get that to us before November 15th if possible.

I’m really looking forward to the sharing. It’s not the same as a big meal after worship, but like that, it will touch a lot of hearts.

With aloha,

Pastor Eric
