Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost
Rev. Eric S. Anderson, Pastor
WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD
Welcome Rev. Eric S. Anderson
Prelude: Pastorale – Couperin arr. Stephens Kayleen Yuda
Call to Worship: based on Psalm 106:1-6, 19-23 Barbara Iwami
Leader: Praise the LORD! O give thanks to the LORD, whose steadfast love endures forever.
All: Who can state all the mighty doings of the LORD, or declare in full God’s praise?
Leader: Happy are those who observe justice, who do righteousness at all times.
All: Truthfully those have been few, and we strive to be included among them.
Leader: Even those who saw the works of God in Egypt and by the Red Sea were foolish enough to make a golden calf.
All: May we be like Moses, to stand and ask that God forgive those who repent their folly and their pride.
Please join me in the Invocation: based on Matthew 22:1-14 Barbara Iwami
Gracious and Holy One, you have invited us to a feast, a gathering more wondrous than a royal wedding, a time more joyous than any human celebration of love. May we never be among those who decline your invitation to rejoice. May we never be among those who resist your grace and compassion. May we never be among those who fail to prepare ourselves to share love and joy. Amen.
Hymn Duet #586 Come to Tend God’s Garden Eric Anderson

Scripture: Philippians 4:1-9 Barbara Iwami
Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved. I urge Euodia and I urge Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. Yes, and I ask you also, my loyal companion, help these women, for they have struggled beside me in the work of the gospel, together with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life. Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.
Story/Sermon: Pollyanna Rev. Eric S. Anderson
Pastoral Prayer Rev. Eric S. Anderson
Please join me in the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen
Instrumental Anthem: Nocturne Op. 9-2, Chopin Kanako Okita
Call to Offering: Barbara Iwami
We invite you to an offering. You cannot place your gifts in a calabash or a plate. Instead, they must make their way through the mail in an envelope sent to 440 West Lanikaula Street, Hilo, Hawai’i, 96720, or as information on the Internet submitted at holycrosshilo.com/donate. However you send them, let them be gifts of the heart that extend your love and compassion to your neighbors and your friends, and also to the stranger on the far side of the world. Let us pray together:
Offertory Prayer:
Our world is filled with glory, O God; our universe sings your praise. We sometimes appreciate the signals of your grace, and sometimes we miss them amidst the noise of the world’s hardships. In these gifts, we would be another sign of your compassion for all your people. In these gifts, may the universe sing your praise. Amen
