Worship for July 12, 2020
Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

Rev. Eric S. Anderson, Pastor

WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD

Pre-Service Music:                                                                  Kayleen Yuda

Welcome                                                                                 Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Prelude: Toccata In ‘A’ Minor                                                 Kayleen Yuda

Call to Worship: based on Romans 8:1-11                        Eric Tanouye
Leader: There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
People: God has done what guidance and warning could not do.

Leader: God has granted us forgiveness beyond all expectation.
People: God has given us the chance to start again, and even to start again.

Leader: With the mind set on the things of this Earth, we find our hearts will break.
People: With our minds set on the Spirit, we find life and peace.

Leader: You are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you.
People: May God give us life in the Spirit during this time of worship.

Invocation based on Psalm 119:105-112:
O God, your word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. We have tried to follow the path of your direction; we have tried to do the things you have asked. We find ourselves afflicted, O God, by the dangers of a pandemic, by the oppressions of human greed, and by the sorrows of Earth. Guide us that we may not stray from your precepts; may your decrees ever be the joy of our hearts. Give us life. Give us joy. Give us hope, for we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Hymn Duet & Movement: #318 Almighty God, Your Word Is Cast
                                          Eric Anderson & Doug Albertson
movement led by Genie Phillips

Almighty God, your Word is cast like seed into the ground;
Now let the dew of heaven descend and righteous fruits abound.

Let not the sly satanic foe this holy seed remove,
But give it root in every heart to bring forth fruits of love.

Let not the world’s deceitful cares the rising plant destroy,
But let it yield a hundredfold the fruits of peace and joy.

So when the precious seed is sown, your quickening grace bestow,
That all whose souls the truth receive its saving power may know.

by John Cawood

Scripture: Romans 8:1-11
Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23

Pastoral and Movement Prayer                                    Rev. Eric S. Anderson

Lord’s Prayer in unison:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come.  Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Instrumental Anthem: Sonata in D minor, K.9—Domenico Scarlatti
                                                                                                Kanako Okita

Lay Reader — Invitation to the Offering:

Those who are gathered here placed your offering in the calabash as you entered. If not, feel free to place it in the calabash as you leave. Those who are worshiping at home can give via our website, holycrosshilo.com. However you are present with us, we invite you to this moment of generosity, to this time of planting your love and care in others as God has planted love and care in us. Let us gather in prayer to bless and dedicate these gifts.

Prayer of Dedication

Gracious and Holy One, you whose love and grace comes to us in a shower of blessing, may the seeds of your compassion take root in us. Bless the gifts that we are offering, that they may be a shower of blessing to people near to us and to people far away, whom we may never meet. May our gifts become your gifts. May our love grow into your love. May our lives be lived in your life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
