Open My Eyes

Open my eyes, that I may see glimpses of truth thou hast for me;
Place in my hand the wonderful key that shall unclasp and set me free:
Silently now I wait for Thee, Ready, my God, Thy will to see:
Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine!
Open my ears, that I may hear voices of truth Thou sendest clear;
And while the wave notes fall on my ear, Everything false will disappear:
Silently now I wait for Thee, Ready, my God, Thy will to see:
Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine!
Open my mouth, and let me bear gladly the warm truth everywhere;
Open my heart, and let me prepare Love with Thy children, thus to share:
Silently now I wait for Thee, Ready, my God, Thy will to see:
Open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine!
Words and music by Clara H. Scott (1841-1897)
Based on Psalm 119:18
During Ash Wednesday’s Bible study, Pastor Eric encouraged us to create a space in our heart for God to fill. I think the words to this song provide us ways for God to enter that space. We are all busy people. We all have lives to live, jobs to do, families and friends to love and help; projects to complete.
Lent is a sacred time of waiting to open our eyes, ears, mouths, and heart to listen and find God’s purpose for us. To grow as Christians, we read our Bibles, pray, attend church, and participate in our church’s programs. We help our neighbors by offering gifts of friendship, talents, skills, food, and, most important, pray for them. We are aware and contribute to God’s work in our State, country and around the world.
Spend time with other Christians: you’ll find God blesses you by filling a space in your heart.
