What I’m Thinking: Music

In Ephesians, we’re offered the advice to sing hymns and spiritual songs. I can’t think of a much better idea.

Here’s a transcript:

I’m thinking about the fifth chapter of Ephesians today (Ephesians 5:15-20). It begins with some fairly direct advice about being cautious around alcohol – good advice, I’d say, in the first century and in the twenty-first – but it continues with two lines of real celebration of the gift of music, the advice to sing hymns and spiritual songs, and to fill our spirits with the Holy Spirit.

Well, I play ukulele, I play guitar, I’ve been a singer for far longer than I’ve been able to make music on anything made with hands, and the gift of music is one of the deepest and most precious in my life.

So I can just echo that ancient wisdom to you: Turn to the gift of music and let it fill your soul. Whether you’re making it or whether you’re listening to it, let music come inside. Let that manifestation of God’s Holy Spirit dance with your spirit – and fill you.

That’s what I’m thinking. I’m curious to hear about what you’re thinking. Leave me your thoughts in the comment section below; I’d love to hear from you.

By the way, Pastor Eric and some friends will be sharing the gift of music on Saturday, August 25, at 7 pm at Church of the Holy Cross. It’s a benefit for those affected by the eruption in Puna.
