Update: Sept 15 Service in Hilo Remembering Rev. Yamane
Rev. Susumu Yamane passed away Monday, July 9, 2018, on O`ahu at the age of 90. Rev. Yamane was in hospice care in the Palolo Chinese Home since late May 2018 following a head injury sustained in a fall. Rev. Yamane served as Church of the Holy Cross’s Senior Pastor from 1971 to his retirement in 1994. Following his retirement, Rev. Yamane was named Minister Emeritus for Church of the Holy Cross recognizing his long leadership in the church. An advocate for reaching out into the community and world service, he guided the church’s role being instrumental in the development of the Hilo Campus Ministry, Hospice of Hilo, and Habitat for Humanity, and for international work through Bread for the World. He is survived by his wife, Miyeko, brother Noboru (Betsy) Yamane, children Naomi (Dan) Giovanni, Deborah (Ross) Watabayashi and Jon (Joy) Yamane; three grandchildren, Jordan Nakagawa, Janna (Justin) Frash, and Gavin Watabayashi. Services were held on August 11 at Waipahu United Church of Christ.

We will honor the life of our Pastor Emeritus, the Rev. Susumu Yamane, at a special memorial service at 10:00 am on Saturday, September 15, at the church. His years of ministry gave so much to our community. Let us thank God for his life and faith.
Miyeko is unable to travel to Hilo; however, Debbie, Jon and Joy plan to attend the service. Pastor Eric Anderson will recite the Bible readings and prayers, and will be aided by Woody Kita, James Yoshiyama and Gloria Kobayashi.
In lieu of koden, the family suggests that gifts in Reverend Yamane’s memory be made to Care Services of Hawaii, 1011 Waianuenue Avenue, Hilo, Hawai , or Habitat for Humanity Hawaii Island, 863 ‘Iolani Street, Hilo, Hawaii.
