What I’m Thinking: Foolish

The Apostle Paul raised up the foolishness of God in an attempt to make the squabbling Corinthians… wise.

Here’s a transcript:

I’m thinking about the first chapter of Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 1:18-25), and in it Paul is address people who have been having some, well, some discussion that have gone into dissension, controversy, even conflict.

And Paul goes to the heart of it. He notes that the Good News that he has been proclaiming, that the other leaders of the early Church have been proclaiming, that in fact the Corinthians had adopted and been accepting of: well, it’s a message that’s foolish in many ways to all of the cultures of that ancient world.

The Jewish culture in which Paul had been raised. And the Greek cultures in which the Corinthians had been raised.

Now, personally, I’m in favor of wisdom. And honestly, I look around at our culture and I see a great deal of foolishness.

But that’s not the foolishness to which the Apostle Paul calls us. He calls us to a foolishness that is a trust in God to be more gracious to us than at first appears, a foolishness that trusts in God to overcome both sin and death, the suffering of the world, and even our own pretended wisdom.

To trust in God beyond what we can imagine.

You know what? I’ll take that foolishness as wisdom.

That’s what I’m thinking. I’m curious to hear what you’re thinking. Please leave me your thoughts in the comment section below; I’d love to hear from you.
